The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey: Built To Amaze! circus spectacular performances return this Saturday (11:30 a.m. & 3:30 p.m.) and Sunday (1:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m.) to the Allstate Arena (6920 N. Mannheim Road) in Rosemont through November 11th. This year’s performances feature an all-access pre-show where everyone can meet the international cast of performers as they prepare for the show pick-up some hip dance moves at the dance party get to try on some custom designed costumes learn circus skills such as juggling and more. Kids also will have an opportunity to join a tug-of-war battle between the girls and boys in Built To Amaze!
Redmoon Central (2120 S. Jefferson Street) in the Pilsen neighborhood hosts a new event this year Skelebration this Saturday (11:00 a.m. & 2:00 p.m.) and Sunday (2:00 p.m. & 5:00 p.m.) to celebrate the fall season. This family-friendly event features the opportunity for parents and their children to interact in a variety of activities such as art projects where you can create your own skeleton mask for the parade that takes place around the space or play in the indoor park on oversized swings or ride bikes and/or mini motorized cars around a track or roller skate in the disco ball rink or watch a puppet show and much much more!
The Dia de los Muertos Craftstravaganza is a celebration of passed loved ones known as the Day of the Dead on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Evanston Public Library (1703 Orrington Avenue) in Evanston. Free and open to all ages this celebration offers attendees a chance to make their own muertos folk art such as sugar skulls fun masks and dioramas all while listening to the Aztec performers who will be demonstrating a drumming ceremony. Also altars (shrines) will be on display and await your vote to become the best in show!
Returning again this year to the William H. Ray Elementary School (5631 S. Kimbark Avenue) in the Hyde Park neighborhood on Saturday from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. is the South Side Pie Challenge! Here pie enthusiasts compete for one of the top three winners in each pie category: cream nut fruit and pumpkin/sweet potato. For non-pie contestants a slice will cost you only $3 while coffee is being generously donated by the Robust Coffee Lounge. There will also be local musicians as well as kids’ activities so you can enjoy your many slices of pie!
Over a dozen pro and amateur chefs’ battle it out for top chili honors at this year’s Wicker Park Chili Cook-Off being held in the parking lot of Moonshine (1824 W. Division Street) in the Wicker Park neighborhood on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Voted on exclusively by the public 1st place takes $600 in cash and the Gilded Ladle trophy 2nd place takes $300 in cash and 3rd place takes $150. Drink specials will be available and your admission will be discounted by $5 with a warm coat donation!
Jefferson Memorial Park (4822 N. Long Avenue) in the Jefferson Park neighborhood is the place to be on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for the Gift Theatre’s new version of the infamous broadcast War of the Worlds in celebration of the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles’ panic-inducing radio broadcast! Advance reservations are recommended though.
