TECHNOLOGY TIPS – GIGABIT TECHNOLOGY IN EVERY CITY BY 2015?

Last Friday the FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski challenged all broadband providers state and municipal community leaders to have at lease 1GB (gigabit) Internet community in each state by 2015. The aggressive challenge is spurred on by Google’s investment in Kansas City and Google Fiber. Not only is there gigabit internet but there is also streaming TV service.

Proposing a joint effort with the US Conference of Mayors called the FCC’s Broadband Acceleration Initiative Genachowski plans to create a new online clearinghouse of best practices for the sake of collecting and sharing information. This information would include how to lower costs how to increase speed of broadband deployment nationwide and how to create a gigabit community similar to Kansas City.

With success in not only Kansas City but also Chattanooga Tennessee "The Gigabit City Challenge is designed to drive a critical mass of gigabit communities like these creating new markets for 21st century services promoting competition spurring innovation and driving economic growth nationwide" the FCC added.
