LINCOLN PARK

Get reacquainted with Dolphin at 2200 N. Ashland Ave. Once known as Green Dolphin Street this was a legendary Lincoln Park venue featuring jazz music and house-music Boom Boom Room parties on Monday nights. Opening on Friday the space has undergone a makeover with a 100000-watt sound system lounge and dance floor. You won’t find jazz here anymore but Boom Boom Room remains… now on Sunday nights.

PORTAGE PARK

If you’re continuing to keep up with Chicago Neighborhood News you’d know just how cool The Portage Theater is from last weekend’s Portage International Film Festival. Well this Friday will be even cooler! Old school! The Portage Theater will be screening the original Star Wars Trilogy beginning with Star Wars: A New Hope at 7:00pm. Just in case you missed seeing these classics on the big screen when you were a kid.

In honor of Martin Luther King Day 2013 The Joffrey Ballet will be hosting an African Dance Workshop. This class taught by Andrea Vinson is an introduction to African dance with live drumming. This fun-for-all-ages event is Joffrey Ballet’s way of showing their respect and appreciation for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s influence on human rights.

OLD TOWN

Gene Kato has moved onward from his acclaimed work as head chef of the successful restaurant Japonais. He and his wife have created the highly anticipated tri-level project of Sumi Robata Bar and Charcoal Bar soft-opening tonight at 702 N. Wells. Come and savor this Japanese style of eatery that features charcoal grilling with spectator seating to add an element of excitement to your dining experience. Charcoal Bar on the bottom floor will feature mixologist Matthew Lipsky introducing Japanese chipped-ice bartending to the Old Town neighborhood and all of Chicago.

OAK PARK

This Saturday at 7:30pm will be 2013’s first Monthly Skywatch at Cernan Earth and Space Center Triton College 2000 Fifth Ave. in nearby River Grove. Each month scientific information including the latest discoveries in astronomy and space science will be presented to the public with focus on the current nighttime sky. If weather permits telescopes will be used to observe the moon planets and other wonders of the sky. The Monthly Skywatch is recommended for people 13 years of age and older due to the more advanced level of information to be discussed.
