As we patiently or perhaps anxiously await the arrival of summertime here in Chicago this last weekend in April would be a great time to experience some of Chicago’s indoor family-friendly activities with your kids or the kid in You!

The Adler Planetarium (1300 S. Lake Shore Drive) on the near south side has several special family activities lined up for this Saturday and Sunday –

Astronomy Day is this Saturday (9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) and there’s no better way to celebrate it than at the Adler. At this event you can create your own Astronomy Day hat and flag as well as enter a drawing for your chance to win a Celestron Telescope – winner to be announced at 2:30 p.m.! It’s free with museum admission.

Space Junk 3-D is Saturday and Sunday (11:45 a.m. 1:15 p.m. 2:45 p.m.) at the Adler’s Universe Theater. Take a visually explosive journey of discovery that weighs the solutions aimed at restoring the Earth’s orbits. Mind-boggling collisions in time lapse sequences captured with the magical imagery of 3D are what you will experience at this event. Remember what goes up doesn’t always come down!

Undiscovered Worlds is Saturday (10:00 a.m. 10:45 a.m. 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.) and Sunday (11:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.) at the Adler’s Definiti Space Theater. Scientists have learned our solar system is not alone in the universe through the discovery of exoplanets. Learn how with new instruments like the Kepler Telescope and rapidly improving technologies how the discovery of these exoplanets puts us one step closer to finding an Earth-like world in this new space show. Is there another Earth-like planet out there?

The Chicago Children’s Museum Navy Pier (700 E. Grand Avenue) in the Streeterville neighborhood hosts these family-friendly activities for the weekend –

Buggin’ Out wraps up at the end of the month for this event so get out there and make a bug friend design a bug bling complete bug challenges take part in a bug flash mob learn fun facts about bugs create an itty bitty nature drawing in the art studio to take home or even snack on one (Saturday only) if you dare!

Circus Zirkus gets you more than just a front-row seat. Kids can immerse themselves in backstage preparations perform routines in the center ring manage the behind-the-scenes action of lights and sounds try making a circus balance toy or even dress up like a clown. This is your chance to be the star of the show!

The Irish American Heritage Center (4626 N. Knox Avenue) in the Irving Park neighborhood is hosting National Day of Puppetry this Saturday (10:00 a.m. doors open; 11:00 a.m. show) as they honor puppetry in all its forms as one of the oldest arts. Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with The Melikin Puppet Theatre’s “Dragon Feathers” a collection of fables legends myths and the history of dragons. Early arrivals will be greeted by a short piece “The Fiddler” in the lobby. Also featured is a Puppet Market along with hands-on workshops by Sea Beast Puppetry and Magic Hand Puppet Theatre.

Head on out to Brookfield Zoo (8400 31st Street) in Brookfield as it celebrates Ape Awareness Weekend from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Participate in ape-related activities and learn about the apes – orangutans western lowland gorillas and white-cheeked gibbons – that reside in the Tropic World exhibit. Fun family activities engage you in discovering ways you can help the wild ape populations of Asia and Africa along with informal animal Zoo Chats presented by the keepers where you can learn even more about the apes!
