Tips For Maintaining Houseplants

Adding plants to your home will give it a fresher and brighter feel and will also improve your home’s air quality. Although it does take a little bit of work and consistency to maintain your plants, but it’s well worth the effort. Here are a few tips for keeping your plants looking great.

Use leftover water from cooking. Plants love the extra nutrients from your leftover cooking water that can’t be found straight from the tap. Instead of dumping the water right after boiling vegetables, let it cool and use it to water your plants.

Coffee makes great fertilizer. Rather than throwing your used coffee grounds in the trash, empty out your French press or coffee filter straight into a planter.

Dust your plants. This should be part of your regular dusting and cleaning routine. Keeping your plants’ leaves dust-free keeps them healthier.

Pay attention to soil types. Different plants require different soils. Do some research to discover each plant‘s preferred soil. For instance, succulents require sandy, dry soil.

Beware of root rot. Houseplants are prone to root rot because there’s often no where for excess water to drain from the planter. Prevent root rot by putting pebbles in the bottom of the planter, which elevates the roots. Use a water-hydrogen peroxide mixture for plants that are already showing signs of root rot.

Restaurant Review- Velvet Taco

If variety is indeed the spice of life, you don’t need to wander far to find a tasty, unique spin on the classic taco in Lincoln Park.

The recently opened Velvet Taco at 2309 N. Lincoln features delicious offerings that take the always reliable Mexican cuisine standby and expands its culinary potential creating a new take on what a “taco joint” can be.

The menu at Velvet Taco is full of “wow I never thought of that” items that open up a whole new world of deliciousness for whatever your taste buds are demanding at the moment. Whether you crave chicken, meat, fish, or none of the above, the tacos here are second to none in taste and creativity.

The mouthwatering Spicy Tikka Chicken taco, featuring chicken tenders brilliantly accented by tikka sauce, Thai basil, and cilantro basmati rice on a flour tortilla shell, is by far one of the standouts at Velvet Taco. Of course, you can’t go wrong with their Cuban Pig taco featuring slow-roasted pulled pork, peppered bacon, honey ham, and Gruyere cheese. For those looking for a non-meat option, Velvet Taco offers three vegetarian choices with their Nashville hot tofu, fried paneer, and Falafel tacos.

But it doesn’t end there. How about a Kobe bacon burger taco? Yes, you read that right, and it’s beyond delicious. Or perhaps a slow-roasted Angus brisket taco is what your taste buds desire. Fish tacos will never be the same once you dine on the selection Velvet Taco offers. The Shrimp & Grits taco showcasing blackened shrimp, pepper jack cheese grits, tomato salsa, and creole remoulade or the Grilled Salmon taco with avocado crema, roasted corn pico, and pickled Fresnos are great picks.

Also, Velvet Taco has brunch available all day featuring bacon and eggs and chicken and waffles as well as sides in the inspired form of red curry coconut queso and ‘Elote’ corn.

With 17 different and delicious tacos to choose from, Velvet Taco has unleashed a plethora of flavors that redefine what quality fast food can be, whether your grabbing lunch or need a late-night feast.

This Lincoln Park spot creates a creative spin on a Chicago favorite that will leave you impatiently waiting to try the next taco you didn’t get around to the first time. Or the second time. Or the fifteenth time.

So the next time you are in Lincoln Park and have a craving for Mexican that goes far beyond the norm and delivers a delicious meal bite after bite, head to Velvet Taco pronto. And don’t be surprised if you receive a thank you card in the mail from your taste buds.

Kathy’s Home & Garden Tips – How Much Sleep is Enough?

It turns out that the recommended 8 hours of sleep we need is mostly true. People do vary a bit, but experts say the average adult performs best when getting between 7 and 9 hours per night.

When we lack the proper amount of sleep, a host of issues arise. Sleep deprivation causes problems with memory and concentration. Just a day or two of little or no sleep can cause physical problems, even hallucinations! Lack of sleep can have a cumulative effect on long-term health problems like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Studies found that night shift workers’ risk for heart attack and stroke is 40% higher than average. It can also alter your metabolism. The brain usually sheds off certain toxic proteins linked to Alzheimer’s during sleep. Lack of sleep can cause these to rise.

So how do we get better rest and fall asleep easier? One of the essential aspects is to ensure your sleep environment is conducive to achieving a peaceful night of quality shut-eye. Make sure you have a good quality mattress and pillow. Keep out as much external noise as possible. Some machines and apps will play sounds like waves, rain, or music to create a peaceful environment if your neighborhood is too noisy.

Here are a few other tips for creating a proper sleeping environment. It’s a good idea to lower the temperature, 65 degrees is good, but no more than 70 degrees. Also, reduce your blue light exposure at least an hour before bed. So, in other words, turn off the devices!

Of course, you do need bright light during the day. Natural light is best, but artificial bright light bulbs can suffice. This light will increase daytime energy and improve sleep duration and quality.

Furthermore, don’t eat late at night and decrease alcohol use. Digestion can cause you to stay awake. Alcohol increases sleep apnea and snoring — also, no caffeine within 6 hours of bedtime and no liquids for 1 to 2 hours.

You can try supplements such as Melatonin, which is naturally produced in the body — taking 1-5 milligrams 30-60 minutes before bed works well for many people. Do try and go to bed at the same time every night, even weekends. Short naps during the day work well, but long ones, more than 30 minutes, can disrupt sleep. Try a warm bath or shower to relax before bed. Exercise is good but not too late in the evening.

So please don’t underestimate the importance of forming a routine when it comes to getting ready for a good night’s sleep. Remember doing that for your kids when they were little? It works wonders for adults too. Clear your mind, play some soft music while you brush your teeth, try some deep breathing while visualizing something or somewhere peaceful and quiet, and get ready to head off into the land of nod peacefully.

Kathy’s Home & Garden Tips – Caring for Indoor Plants in Winter

We sometimes forget that our indoor plants might need special attention during the winter months. With a little more care, they can come through the season healthy and thriving. Plants improve our feeling of wellbeing. They also increase humidity, reduce CO2 levels, and some airborne pollutants.

First, remember that your house is much drier in the winter. This doesn’t automatically mean you need to water more. Make sure the soil is completely dry before watering and water until the bottom saucer has a ½ inch of water or so. Wait 15 minutes, then empty any water not absorbed. Water more thoroughly- not more often.  High humidity plants can benefit from placing a shallow dish with small pebbles under the plant. Fill with water to just the top of the pebbles. As the water evaporates, it will provide humidity for days. Weekly spraying with water will help greatly too.

The light coming into the house can vary greatly during winter. Some windows that have plenty of light in summer may have much less in winter. Try to place your plants near an east (or better yet southeast) facing window to capture as much light as possible early in the day. You may have to relocate all your plants to this area. Make sure the window is clean! Dirty windows filter light. Dust plant leaves to ensure they absorb as much light as possible. Do be careful to keep tropical plants at a certain distance from the window. Temperatures can be 10 or more degrees lower close to the window. Some tropical plants can benefit from a growing light if the winter light in your house is limited.

Now is a good time to prune and repot- woody or vine plants especially. Even with extra care, some plants go somewhat dormant during winter. Remember to go up no more than two sizes when repotting. Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites and mealy bugs- they do bug us in winter too! Use a good insecticidal soap to keep them in control.

We can keep our indoor plants healthy and thriving all winter with a little extra care. When spring comes, they will be ready to take off!
