Restaurant Review: Pushing up Daisies in Logan Square!
Perfectly named for a summer lunch or dinner, Michelin-starred Daisies in Logan Square is a farm-to-table Midwestern Italian restaurant focusing on house made pastas, using fresh vegetables from Chef Joe Frillman’s family farm in Michigan. Their made-from-scratch pastries and unique desserts are from the creative mind of Pastry Chef Leigh Omillinsky.
As NBC Channel 5 reported, Daisies was one of two Chicago spots that landed on a list of the New York Times’ 50 top restaurants in the U.S. The restaurant earned a “Green Star” as part of the 2023 Chicago Michelin Guide, for its use of “sustainable gastronomy focused on unique flavor profiles utilizing the freshest produce.”
Lunches at Daisies are plentiful, unique and delicious. Chicken Parm is loaded with Tuscan kale and provolone, spiced with atomato vinaigrette, and served on a Hoagie roll. Chicken Caesar Wrap is filled with lemon-pepper chicken, croutons, and Parmesan. Their Turkey Rachel is loaded with purple slaw, slathered in 1000 Island dressing, served on marble rye.Vegetarianpalates will enjoy Daisies’ Zucchini Panini, creatively pairinggreen garlic dressing, goat cheese and mint pesto, served on ciabatta bread.
Dinner starters include a unique Potted Carrot, with duck fat, and The Overpriced Tomato, made with Heirloom tomatoes, bone marrow, and ‘Cheap Balsamic.’ Entrees focus on Daisies’ house-made pastas, like Pappardelle with Mushroom Ragu and Rigatoni with Pork Ragu and fermented tomato, as their Michelin Guide review suggests. Tortellini is made with lentils, wilted greens and Italian sausage. Pierogi is made with potato, mussels, and “Beer You Cook With.”
An impressive array of desserts include a Mascarpone Cheesecake with wine-poached peaches and sunflower mousse, served in a crispy pastry. Blueberry Crostata has toasted almond and lemon-vanilla cream. Crème Brûlée Pie is a mix of popped grains, wildflower honey, and toasted rye.
