CHICAGO NEIGHBORHOOD NEWS – OLD TOWN LOOP PORTAGE PARK LAKEVIEW EVANSTON

OLD TOWN

There’s going to be a new "sports parlor" and restaurant in the neighborhood with a grand opening party tomorrow Friday 10/16 at 7:00pm. The Vig (1527 N. Wells St) is ready with 12 flat-screen TVs for watching Chicago teams on game days only. Owner Ryan S. Marks plans to cover the TVs with artwork or keep them hidden on nongame days making his new establishment more than your typical sports bar. Marks is no restauranteur newcomer from his extensive experience as a partner with The Big Onion Tavern Group which includes successful bar/restaurants such as 404 Wine Bar Co. Diag Bar & Grill and Derby. RSVP to attend tomorrow’s grand opening at The Vig by emailing info@thevigchicago.com.

LOOP

The pop-up party that makes artistic use of Loop alleyways known as Activate will be holding its final event for the season on Friday 10/23. RSVP ahead of time to receive your first drink for free. There is never a cover charge to attend Activate but keep in mind that drinks can be purchased with cash only. This month’s event will take place in the Harrison St. alley between Michigan and Wabash Avenues 5:00pm – 10:00pm.

PORTAGE PARK

Edwin G. Foreman College and Career Academy (3235 N. Leclaire Ave) is the school being hardest hit with a CPS budget cut of over $1.3 million but that didn’t hold the school back from having an especially outstanding Homecoming football game and celebration last Friday 10/9. One of the school’s educators athletic director Jeff Bernstein surprised the students by wearing a wrestling singlet and sunglasses to perform an outrageous dance routine during the pep rally before the big game. It apparently helped as the Foreman football team went to win against Lake View High School with a score of 38 – 12.

LAKEVIEW

Stan’s Donuts opened its third Chicago location this past Saturday 10/10 in Lakeview at 2800 N. Clark St. The popular donuts are modeled after the famous Los Angeles establishment that’s been serving Hollywood’s elite since 1963. The partnership between the originator Stan Berman and Chicago-based Rich Labriola of the Labriola Baking Company has been hugely successful with locations in Wicker Park and Streeterville. Now us Chicagoland northsiders don’t have as far to travel for these gourmet treats and coffee.

EVANSTON

La Principal is the new Mexican restaurant that’s replaced Lupita’s at 700 Main St. and has been open since the beginning of the month. Their dinner hours are 5:30pm – 11:00pm with a menu of contemporary Mexican street food and full bar. The newest feature is the walk-up window serving Mexican coffee and churros to morning commuters from 6:30am – 10:00am daily.
