KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – JULY LAWN GARDEN AND HOME

Lawn- with the hot weather it’s best to leave the grass a little longer and mow more often. We mow about every fifth day. Never remove more than one third the length of the grass at a time. This promotes healthy growth. We have had more than enough rain lately but remember the lawn needs one inch per week. We will get a dry spell eventually.

The garden needs care and upkeep now. Veggies are growing at a fast pace so you will need to fertilize every two weeks. Use a bloom encouraging fertilizer as blooms are the same as fruits. Make sure tomatoes beans and cucumber vines are supported and secured. As soon as these plants produce ripe fruits pick to encourage more. Keep garden as weed free as possible as weeds compete with good plants for water and nutrients.

Keep drains around the house free and clear to discourage seepage. Make sure gutters are free and flowing. Check windows and doors for caulking repairs. Look around the outside of the house for peeling paint especially in high sun areas. Scrape and paint with primer and appropriate outdoor paint.

With a little effort we can keep everything ship shape through the summer.
