TECHNOLOGY TIPS – CHICAGO’S WARMING CENTERS

We’ve already experienced a polar vortex in Chicago and now we’re looking at below zero warnings again.

With bitter cold weather it’s important to keep warm and safe which means it’s time to keep warm. Residents are encouraged to use one of Chicago’s local warming centers if necessary. According to the City of Chicago website "a Warming Center is a heated facilty where Chicagoans can go to find safe refuge from extreme weather." The warming centers are available from 9am-5pm Monday through Friday. The Garfield Center at 10 S. Kedzie Avenue is open 24 hours a day seven days a week. The best way to find the closest center near you is to call 3-1-1.

Here are some precautions you can take for protecting yourself from the cold weather.

  1. Wear multiple layers of clothing preferably warm and loose
  2. Be sure to keep your hands feet and head covered
  3. Beware of hypothermia symptoms. They include cold skin shivering stiff muscles slow breathing swollen or puffy face and mental confusion
  4. If you need to use a space heater do not use an extension cord ever.
  5. Do not use your oven to heat your home.

Be safe during these extreme weather conditions and keep yourself safe.
