PORTAGE PARK

In case you missed it Portage Park expanded their dog-friendly area on August 3rd. The space now has plenty of room to run dog beaches and a water fountain. With the city’s fifth largest "doggie" area Alderman Tim Cullerton said the $75000 expansion was necessary because the existing dog park was too small. The dog park is near Central and Berteau in the northwest corner of Portage Park. The original plan called for separate small and large dog areas but getting the water to the large dog area prevented it. To bring your dog to the off-lease dog park your dog must have a special tag which costs $5.

LINCOLN PARK

Introducing the newly opened Standard Market Grill near Clark and Fullerton. The original Standard Market is located in Westmont which you may not have visited yet. They offer an interesting menu including chocolate milkshakes with Bobtail ice cream lobster rolls boneless chicken and waffles and hamburgers ground fresh daily just to name a few. You place your order at the register and are given an electronic table tracker so your server can deliver your food. There is also a bar and take out so you can head out to Fullerton Beach.

LINCOLN SQUARE

Seen any good Shakespeare lately? Now is your chance to get up close and personal with the Traveling Players as they perform "As You Like It" in Hamlin Park. The performances will be August 17 18 24 and 25. You can see the play on Saturdays at 2pm or 5p and again on Sundays at 1pm and 4pm. The performances have been modified to only be one hour and are free to the public. Don’t miss seeing this classic the way it was intended.

WEST LOOP

Opening next week prepare yourself for CH Distillery. This will be the city’s first cocktail bar/distillery hybrid. You’ll want to take a few hours to just enjoy this new concept. First take a tour of the distillery so you can learn a little bit about how their spirits are made. Then head out to the bar area where you can get more than a tasting of these delightful spirits. The menu is white table cloth inspired so you won’t be seeing any chocolate shakes here. Enjoy!

NAPERVILLE

If you are looking to spruce up your landscaping this summer the Forest Preserve District (FPD) of DuPage County is offering a free wood-chip pickup day on August 24 from 8am to 1pm. The mulch can be loaded in trucks no larger than a pickup. There will be assistance from a loader manned by a staff member of the native-plant nursery in Blackwell Forest Preserve. Each year the FPD uses the mulch throughout the forest preserves from the yearly brush-clearing and tree-trimming projects with the excess being offered free to residents. Head to the nursery at 29w218 Mack Road West Chicago or call 630-876-5920.
