TECHNOLOGY TIPS – MICROSOFT OFFICE ON THE iPHONE

In a significant move Microsoft has released its very popular suite of productivity tools for the iPhone. Prior to now Microsoft Office which includes Word Excel PowerPoint and Outlook was only available for Windows-based phones. Since the smartphone market is still dominated by the iPhone and the Windows-based phones only capture a sliver of that market this provides a large benefit to the millions of people using Microsoft Office.

Found in Apple’s App Store Office for iPhone is the app which is free to subscribers of Office 365 the cloud-based version of Microsoft Office’s tools for home users. It should be noted that there is a monthly fee for Office 365. This app is intended for users who need to make edits to their documents whether PowerPoint presentations or Excel spreadsheets while on the go. People can also share their documents from their phones and the updates they make to files will be transferred to those documents on PC versions. One limitation is that it is not intended to be used to create new documents from your phone.

"When we launched Office 365 earlier this year we committed to delivering regular updates and new capabilities to Office 365 subscribers" Julia White general manager of Microsoft’s Office division wrote in a blog post. "Office Mobile for iPhone is another great example of the value of subscribing to Office 365."

There is currently no similar version of Microsoft Office for the iPad and they have not mentioned any development plans for Google’s Android mobile devices. The Office app is available now for users in the United States and will be rolling out internationally soon.
