PORTAGE PARK

The Portage Theater at 4050 N. Milwaukee Ave. is one of Chicago’s oldest movie houses since opening in 1920. This Saturday the historical theater will be adding a new film festival courtesy of Spook Show Entertainment Inc. Starting at 9:00am and ending at 10:00pm The Portage International Film Festival schedule includes 2 blocks of short films 5 feature films and ends with the Awards Ceremony starting at 9:15pm. LAKEVIEW

This Friday the 44th Ward Office with the help of Mahogany Builders will be collecting Christmas trees for recycling on January 11. Leave your tree near the area where your trash is collected (curbside or alley) the night before. The ward will be collecting trees throughout the morning and afternoon on Friday. Alderman Tom Tunney will be out there helping with the effort so be sure to say hello!

WEST LOOP

Stephanie Izard (of Girl & the Goat fame) finally opened her homage to classic Chicago diners. It’s called Little Goat. She’s not trying to replace your neighborhood favoriets but she’s got some new twists on old originals like the 1am pork-cheek grilled cheese. Open from 7am to 2am daily there are five ways to eat goat – goat burger Sloppy Goat goat chili goat shepherd’s pie taco salad. So much for losing weight in 2013!

GOLD COAST

Meet Little Market Brasserie located in Talbott Hotel at 10 E. Delaware Place. This all-day dining destination is being brought to you by the producers of Tavernita and Mercadito with head chef Ryan Poli. A full lounge will be opening soon but come in now during the soft-opening to check out their power-breakfast menu through their dinner offerings such as deep-fried cheddar-stuffed pork belly.

OAK PARK

With all the hype surrounding the recent movie release of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey you can’t miss Oak Park’s own “oversized Hobbit House” located at 401 Linden. The home which was designed in 1924 by Leon E. Stanhope has received new attention with its fairytale-like style and English cottage sensibilities. It’s no wonder that this home is situated within Frank Lloyd Wright’s historical district in Oak Park.
