KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – INDOOR POLLUTION

Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency ServicesMost people don’t pay a lot of attention to indoor air quality. Of course there are those expensive machines costing hundreds of dollars. Way too rich for my blood!

I’ve used scented candles or sprays thinking they are harmless not so! Scented candles give off ultra fine particles that can penetrate your lungs. Candles often also emit soot which is definitely not breathable. Forget about air fresheners organic gases are released from the chemicals sprayed.

Other things dangerous to our lungs are anything made of pressed wood. This material is often used in cabinets paneling and lower end furniture. These materials release formaldehyde gas. In the long run you are better off buying products built with solid wood. They last longer and look better. In the case of kitchen cabinets solid wood will pay for themselves at selling time.

If you have allergy problems get rid of the carpeting. Carpets are a haven for dust mites and other allergens. Reduce exposure to dry cleaned garments.

Take care and use few chemicals when cleaning. Baking soda and vinegar are the greatest natural cleaners. If you must use chemicals make sure the room is well ventilated. If you are still cleaning up after the floods this past week keep a vigilant eye out for mold and mildew. A de-humidifier is a good idea especially in the basement.

A simmering pot of apples and cinnamon sticks emits a wonderful fragrance and is all natural. The best thing to do of course is open the windows and let the fresh air in!
