article-neighborhood-content-021617

Lincoln Park: Soup for a cause? Yes please! Bruce Sherman, executive chef of North Pond, is leading “Soup for Solidarity”. Coming together with 20 other chefs in the Chicago area, the proceeds will go to three nonprofit organizations: The Immigrant Workers’ Project, The Southwest Organizing Project, and Centro Romero. The Solidarity Soup website states: “We commit to standing with immigrant communities in the fight to protect their dignity and human rights; their presence among us makes us stronger.” With a minimum donation of $50 by March 1, you will receive 2 pints of soup created by two different chefs. Distribution is on March 7, at soon to be announced locations in Lincoln Park, Wicker Park, and downtown. Make your donation here.

Lakeview: Dollop Coffee, located at 824 W. Belmont Ave., will close its doors this upcoming Sunday. This location was renovated about a year ago, to focus on employee training. Owner Dan Weiss has expressed his deep sadness about the closing in a Facebook post. Designed to be a central training location, he tried closing in the afternoons to allow for training, but it just wasn’t working well for business. The new training location is 55 W. Monroe, in the Loop. Weiss says, “From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone in Lakeview who has supported this gem over the years…It’s been a great ride.” Find out more about Dollop and its 10 other locations here.

Bucktown and Wicker Park:  A long awaited new restaurant had its soft opening in Wicker Park on Wednesday evening. Rhyme Or Reason is a 70s inspired gastro pub and live music venue. With their stage, the owners Le’Qoinne Rice and Zafer Genc hope to feature neighborhood bands on a weekly basis. The DJ booth will be solely vinyl records. Located at 1938 W. Division St., the inside seats 174 and the outdoor patio seats 75. After peeking at the menu, I’m particularly intrigued by the Crab Rangoon Dip and the Duck Tacos: confit duck, hoisin lime sauce, chili brussels sprouts slaw, and fried duck skins on blue corn tortillas. Check out other mouthwatering items here.

River North: Au Cheval, a West Loop restaurant, boasts one of the best hamburgers in the city. Now, a more casual extension, Small Cheval, will open later this year in River North at 150 N. Riverside Plaza. The new office tower will also include Hannah’s Bretzel, Starbucks, and other restaurants. Scheduled to open in the next 6 to 8 months, this is an anticipated opening of a beloved Chicago restaurant. Whet your appetite by visiting Au Cheval at 800 W. Randolph St.. Expect to wait, as it’s a very popular spot.

Chicago Loop: A new bed and breakfast is scheduled for a June opening at 1134 W. Washington Blvd. Shawn Uldrige and Kimberly Lowery are thrilled to open The Publishing House Bed and Breakfast in the 100-year old building. The B&B will have 11 rooms, as well as The Press Room wine bar and a location of the West Loop’s Solo Salon. Rooms range from $179 to $309 a night. Uldridge and Lowery hope to use the space for wedding parties and corporate clients who would book the entire space.

Evanston: The Evanston Environmental Association (EEA) and the City of Evanston will present the second evening of the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on February 24 at 7 pm. Held at the Evanston Ecology Center, the festival offers a line-up of the best in environmental and adventure short films. EEA members get $5 off their ticket and $2 off their guest tickets. Restaurant Review – Del Seoul

article-review-content-021517

I’m a sucker for great Asian food and there is no shortage in Chicago. I am so happy to have stumbled upon Del Seoul, a tucked away Korean Street BBQ restaurant in Lakeview. The restaurant is small and unassuming, with counter service and a limited number of tables. We began our meal with two of their appetizers: The K-town Chicken Wings and the Kimchi Fries. Between three of us, the 8 piece chicken wings were the perfect size. Drenched in a sweet soy, chili, and garlic glaze, the wings were crunchy, moist, and delicious. The basket of fries was piled high with sautéed kimchi, onions, pork belly, scallions, melted cheddar and jack cheese, and sour cream. While the toppings were delicious, the fries were not quite hot enough and got soggy near the bottom. Del Seoul is known for their street tacos and we couldn’t leave without trying some. Between $2.90 and $3.75 per taco, the prices can’t be beat either. I had the Sesame-Chili Shrimp and Kalbi (grilled beef short rib), each on flour tortillas. The shrimp was absolutely delicious, panko-battered, crispy, and topped with a sesame-chili aioli. The “secret slaw” was just the right amount of crunch. The Kalbi was really the star for me. The meat was tender and cooked to perfection. With a hint of spice, it perfectly balanced the coolness of the slaw and cilantro-onion relish.

We came in at peak time on a Saturday night, were able to find a table quickly, and the food service was lightning fast. Although at times there was a line for the counter, it never seemed other customers had trouble finding tables. Del Seoul serves both beer and wine. They deliver within a mile radius of the restaurant; you can find more information on that here. Hours: Monday-Thursday from 11:30 am- 9:30 pm, Friday-Saturday from 11:30 am- 10 pm, and Sunday from 11:30 am- 9 pm.

Kathy’s Home & Garden Tips – New Slow Cooker Recipes

article-home-and-garden-content-021417

Although it almost seems like spring these days around Chicago, we who are natives know there will be plenty of cold days left when a crockpot full of goodness with some fresh baked rolls will be very welcome. Here are three recipes guaranteed to satisfy you. They also work when the weather is warm and you don’t want to over-heat the kitchen. Replace the rolls with salad.

Beef Roast with Onions and Potatoes

Slice one sweet onion in half, then slice ¼ inch thick. Cover the bottom of the cooker with the onions. Place beef roast on top, removing any netting or strings. Around the roast, arrange three baking potatoes cubed about 2 inches, along with two cloves chopped garlic. Add 1 ¼ cups beef broth mixed with 1 envelope onion soup mix. Cook on low for 8-9 hours to desired doneness. We like it almost pull apart, but some like it less. Check at 7 hours, try not to open again or risk lengthening your cooking time. For gravy, remove the roast and vegetables. Turn heat to high. Mix an additional ½ cup beef broth and ¼ cup flour. Slowly whisk into the cooker. Cover and cook for about 15 minutes, while stirring occasionally till thickened. Serve on the side.

Easy Minestrone

Add to a slow cooker

1 can dark kidney beans, drained

1 can garbanzo beans, drained

1 can diced tomatoes with basil, oregano and garlic

1 small bag frozen mixed veggies

1 large vegetable bullion square

1 can V8

1 cup water

Cook on low for 6-7 hours. Add ¾ cup elbow macaroni, cook until it’s tender around 15 minutes.

Serve with rye toast and salad. I love soup and rye toast; real polish rye only please.

Chicken with Dumplings and Vegetables

Add to slow cooker

3 well browned boneless chicken thighs

1 lb small whole red potatoes

1 medium onion, ½ inch dice

5 ¼ cups chicken broth

Cook on low 8-9 hours. Make dumplings with Bisquik, following package directions. Drop onto chicken mixture in spoonfuls and cook for an additional 45 minutes, until dumplings are dry in the center.

Stick to your ribs food, suitable for any time of year!

Buying New Construction? Why You Need an Agent to Help

buying-new-construction-why-you-need-an-agent-to-help

It’s customary to call a real estate professional to help you when you’re on the prowl for a resale home, but what about if you’re interested in new construction? Isn’t it enough just to deal with the builder to choose a lot, select your home’s layout, and seal the deal? After all, you don’t have to deal with a seller or need a home inspection.

Contrary to what you might believe, buying new construction isn’t as simple as picking out a specific model and signing a few papers. It’s still a real estate transaction and needs to be carefully navigated before you make any commitments.

Here are just a handful of reasons why a professional real estate agent should be by your side representing you when purchasing a new home build.

Make Sure You Work With a Trusted Builder

Many new home construction builders are reputable, but some aren’t. How will you be able to spot the bad apples in the bushel? Having a real estate agent on your team can help you focus on builders that have a good track record of following through with their promises and delivering high-quality craftsmanship. Understanding how a specific builder works can help to avoid any unpleasant surprises and pitfalls down the line.

Offer a Sense of Security

Just like with a resale transaction, having a buyer agent represent you will ensure that your best interests will be looked after. Builders are in it for the money, just like any other type of business. That’s not to say that you won’t be treated with professionalism, but the builder’s best interests inevitably lie with them.

If you work with the builder’s real estate agents, they’ll be representing the builder, not you. The builder’s representatives will be working to keep the best interests of the builder in mind rather than yours.

Having the sense of security to know that you have a professional who’s experienced in the realm of real estate – including new construction – can help ease the stresses that are often associated with entering these types of transactions and ensure that you are properly looked after.

Ask the Right Questions

When you’re buying from a builder, you must ask the right questions to get the answers you need to make an informed buying decision. An experienced real estate agent will know the right questions to ask.

What extra charges will you be responsible for paying? Can you transfer the agreement before it closes? What type of warranty is offered? What upgrades can be selected? These questions only scratch the surface of what should be asked before you sign on with a builder, and your agent will now exactly what to ask.

Guide You to Choosing Upgrades That Will Bring the Most ROI

Just because you’re in the process of buying a new home doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider the potential of selling your home some time in the future. While you may have decided that this will be your “forever” home, anything can happen. Choosing the right upgrades for the specific neighborhood you’re buying into can help add more value to the property should you ever sell.

In addition, experienced real estate agents will be able to provide you with advice on upgrades that would be more cost-effective to do on your own or with a separate contractor after the fact to help keep more money in your pocket.

Ensure the Contract is Solid

If you’ve ever been involved in a real estate transaction before, then you’re likely well aware of the fact that these contracts can be lengthy and often confusing. There’s a ton of real estate industry lingo in these documents that the average person may not understand. Just like a real estate agent can help you navigate these contracts in a typical resale deal, so can they assist you when reviewing the contracts that you will be bound to with the builder.

Help With Negotiations

Negotiating isn’t just reserved for sellers of resale homes. You can also work with a builder to make the deal a little bit sweeter for you. Real estate professionals understand exactly where they should be focusing their negotiating tactics. Even if the builder is set on the purchase price, they may be willing to include extra upgrades or even closing fees in the deal.

The Bottom Line

It’s easy to get caught up in the allure of new home construction, especially when you visit a sales center or model home and see how beautiful a new home can potentially look like. But it’s important to keep your head up and treat this transaction like any other contact. Having proper representation in the form of a buyer agent can help ensure you’re covering all the bases and protecting your pocketbook.

Restaurant Review – Cohiba Cuban Cuisine

article-review-content-020817

This week’s restaurant travels took me to Cohiba Cuban Cuisine. Located near the intersection of Broadway and Diversey in Lakeview, don’t blink or you’ll miss this hole-in-the-wall gem.  There were only a handful of customers when I came in, so I was seated right away. The lighting was warm and low and there are a limited number of tables, making this a perfect date night spot. I started with a mojito and was not disappointed. The balance of soda, mint, and rum was perfection. Crisp, cool, and refreshing. While looking through the menu, my mouth was watering. The Mariquitas, deep friend plantain chips with a garlic dipping sauce, caught my eye. The Churrasco also looked incredible, Cuban style skirt steak, marinated with garlic and fresh herbs and served with chimichurri. But at $28, this was a bit out of my price range for the evening. I decided on the Sandwich Cubano, a Cuban classic. I could not have been more pleased. The sandwich was huge and came with a mountain of house-made potato chips. The bread was thick and fluffy, covered in melted cheese, topped with mustard and pickles. The smoked ham and roasted pork were perfectly salty and complimented the sweetness of my mojito quite nicely. The potato chips were excellent as well. At only $8, you can’t beat the quality or quantity of food.

Cohiba offers dine-in, carry-out, delivery, and online ordering. They are open Sundays through Thursdays from 11 am to 10 pm and Fridays/Saturdays from 11 am to 11 pm. They also offer brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 am to 3 pm. Since opening their new full service bar, they offer a number of drink specials during the week, including half-off margaritas on Tuesdays and $8 mojitos on Thursdays.
