NORWOOD PARK

Taft High School principal Mark Grishaber has listened to the opinions of students and parents to reverse his decision to try a 9:00am start time this school year. 200 people had shown up to protest the later start time during the Local School Council meeting that took place 9/13. As many as 70 Chicagoland schools had planned to push class start times back from 7:45am to 9:00am to save millions of dollars by consolidating bus routes. However by the time of this report 34 of those schools have retracted that decision and will continue with their original start times. There has been a great deal of opposition from students and parents due to the later dismissal time of 4:18pm that would prevent students from retaining after school jobs and may keep them awake until later hours in order to make time for homework and other after school activities such as sports. Although Principal Grishaber had originally thought the plan would be helpful in cutting down first period tardiness his decision to keep the 7:45am start time was a direct result of listening to Taft’s student body’s opinions of their own best interests.

GOLD COAST

P.J. Clarke’s at 1204 N. State St. has just reopened after spending the past 7 months undergoing necessary structural renovations. The establishment has been a popular destination in the Gold Coast since 1986 so it’s understandable that this 150 seat restaurant would be due for some upgrades. While they were at it they also revamped the bar selection menu and added more TVs. There are now 28 brands of scotch to choose from and plans to add outdoor patio seating soon.
