TECHNOLOGY TIPS – NEW FACEBOOK SECURITY CHECKUP

For the past few months Facebook has been working on a new security tool for all users. Over the next weeks you should see a reminder in your News Feed letting you know it is available. The tool is called Security Checkup. At this point the Security Checkup is only available on a desktop. The mobile version has not yet been released. Once you click the link in your feed you’ll be walked through three steps.

Step one will present you with a list of all the apps and/or browsers that are currently connected to your Facebook account. The list of apps are ones you have not used in over a month. You have the option of logging out of the entire list or selecting the specific ones you want to end.

Step two is all about login alerts. This is similar to the feature you have with your Google account receiving an email when your login credentials are used at an unfamiliar device. With Facebook you can choose the method of notification (text message or email). This is a great way to know if someone is trying to hijack your account as well as change your login details to prevent such attacks.

Step three is really more education than an actual action. The advice given in step three is extremely valid though. It’s about creating a strong password. Remember to make your passwords hard to guess long and complex potentially use a password manager and use one password per account.

If you do not get notification of the Security Checkup you can still run it now from your computer.
