After the closing of Portage Theater local Patio Theater stepped in and provided a new home for the Northwest Chicago Film Society despite a broken air conditioner this past summer. Owner Demetri Kouvalis has decided to change the focus of the theater to classic films in addition to those shown for the NCFS. Because of this new direction the theater can now be rented for special events too. Patio Theater is now the only historic theater on the Northwest side. Be sure to set aside time for October’s horror and Halloween-themed movies or December’s family-friendly and Christmas movies.
RAVENSWOOD
Ravenswood Elementary is set to receive the $750000 Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant this year. After a year’s worth of work Governor Quinn made the announcement on Monday. Initially the Friends of Ravenswood School had already raised $200000 in funding to create a play area that was covered by artificial turn. The community came together and reimagined the playground with a new permeable surface that will capture excess rainwater and regulate its release to prevent "Lake Ravenswood." Construction is expected to begin in summer 2014.

Belmont Avenue is likely to get a major change in the next few months as the properties at 909 W. Belmont Ave. 915-925 W. Belmont Ave. and 929 W. Belmont Ave. have been listed for sale by Alderman Tom Tunney. Tunney is the owner of the Ann Sather restaurants and sold his property at 5207 N. Clark Street which marks the likely closing of the Ann Sather in Andersonville while the flagship location on Belmont will most likely remain opened. Tunney has said the reason for listing the properties is "just about me having a little bit of a life."

The weather is going to be beautiful this weekend and it’s a perfect time to head out to the Randolph Street Market Festival. Running from 10a-5p on both Saturday and Sunday it’s a great opportunity to enjoy this European-style indoor-outdoor antique market. The Compass School of Naperville South‘s preschool class is making strides in their own person footprint. Part of the curriculum includes the kids choosing their topics and projects rather than the teacher. The preschoolers said they really wanted to learn about sea turtles which led to a Coastal Clean-Up project and the recyclable items were turned into a sea turtle sculpture. As excitement began spreading through the school the kids further raised funds to adopt a sea turtle nest.
