KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – 17 ITEMS TO ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR CAR

Duct Tape – many uses for this in the car as well as all around the house. Use it for quick upholstery repairs to holding on a damaged tail light or temporarily holding up a muffler.

Fire Extinguisher – always make sure it is not expired and that it is in working condition. Good idea to keep one in the kitchen too!

WD40® – this lubricant works wonders to loosen bolts or fasteners around batteries and air cleaners. It will help remove tar and bugs. Also it helps remove gum from carpet and upholstery.

Blankets – you never know if you’re going to break down in winter. You will also have them handy if you’re going to a sporting event. I know a few spring kids’ soccer games where a blanket would have been most welcome!

Owner’s Manual – this is invaluable for many things including step-by-step flat tire changing instructions. It has fluid types and specification and wiper and air cleaner filter sizes. I love going through mine when I’m not driving. I find some new info every time!

Lug Wrench – I’m sure there is one already in your car but make sure it is one you are able to use easily. I find a four-way wrench is easier for me as it gives a little more leverage to us less strong individuals. It also fits different size bolts.

Gas Can – you never know maybe your gas gauge is off or stops working. I would rather have a can than spend twice as much buying one at a gas station.

Extra Clothes Socks and Jackets – again valuable if you break down but great if your feet get wet or someone needs a jacket at a sporting event.

Food and Water – again break down necessity but good to have in the car in case you get hungry to avoid trips through the fast food lane.

Jumper cables – dead battery? Ask someone for a jump you are ready with your own cables.

Tire Gauge – check tires every other week especially in times of weather temperature fluctuations. Underinflated tires are terrible on your gas mileage.

First Aid Kit – great to have make sure to replenish used items and make sure no items are expired. Include ibuprophen antacids and Pepto Bismol® .

Flashlight – have a small penlight and larger police type. Make sure batteries are fresh and flashlights are operational.

Money – you never know when you’ll need it. Keep $40 or so in the glove compartment for emergencies.

Spare Tire – always make sure your spare tire is in good shape and proper inflation. You never know when you’ll need it.

Shovel – a collapsible shovel can help much if you get stuck in the snow.

Paper Towels and Window Cleaner – keep those windows clean for safe driving!
