Opening this weekend at Theater Wit (1229 W Belmont) is a new show called Magic Matinee. Swing back in time and experience the wonder of a vaudeville magic show. Sean Masterson brings to life the magic and stories of magician "Herrmann The Great". Herrmann’s magical matinees were a beloved Chicago tradition at the end of the 19th century. Sean imaginatively combines sleight of hand magic and baffling illusions with tales of Herrmann’s on and off stage antics. Looking for an unusual evening out? Here are your plans.

Time for Kabocha Japanese Brasserie (952 W Lake St) an innovative house of Japanese-inspired cuisine from the mind of Shin Thompson slated to open very soon. Thompson from Bonsoiree figured it was time to shake up your Japanese standbys: steak with Japanese barbecue sauce topped with ribbons of potatoes and served with ear-smoke-inducing Death Mustard. The bar is big enough for popping in after work to knock back a Japanese dark porter. But the dining room is serious enough for back-slapping business dinners over thick pork chops precisely tweezered hamachi and the aforementioned Shellfish Aquarium a giant fish tank of seafood. The restaurant is at its best when you’re on a date. It’s sexy the booths are intimate and if you want to just relax and let the chef send over 10 courses of whatever he feels like there’s a private two-person kaiseki room.
