KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – DISHWASHER MAINTENANCE

We usually take our dishwashers for granted that they will do a great job cleaning our dishes.

But there are some tricks we can use to make the machine run more efficiently and last longer. Try some of these tips and see if they don’t work with your dishwasher.

1. Remove the racks and clean the inside of the machine. Use baking soda as a scrubbing medium. Check the bottom for debris (food particles flatware etc.) and remove.

2. While the racks are out clean them. If there is any bare metal showing use protective covers. These are available at hardware stores.

3. Check the spray arms. Are all the holes clog-free? Use a toothpick to clean them out. If the spray arm moves up during the wash check the movement and make sure it is working properly.

4. Put the racks back in. Pour a gallon of vinegar in the bottom of the unit and run a light cycle. This will get rid of any mineral deposits that can hamper good performance.

5. You can boost the hot water to the unit by running the water in the sink until it is hot before you start the dishwasher.

6. Standing water after the cycle might mean your pump isn’t working properly. Check the drain hose under the sink to see that it’s not kinked.

Hopefully these tips will help you run your dishwasher more efficiently. If you are still having problems consult an appliance repairman.
