This past Friday the Chicago Gourmet held its first ever "Hamburger Hop" which showcased the culinary talents of local chefs and their interpretation of the hamburger. There were the likes of Stepahnie Izard from Girl & The Goat as well as Eddie Lakin from gourmet dier at Edzo’s Burger Shop. With Thomas Keller of Michelin Guide fame here to announce a Chicago version an unprecedented winner came about – Chef de Cuisine Ryan LaRoche from NoMI. In celebration of the win the burger is being offered with pomme frites and a beer at NoMI for $25.
LINCOLN SQUARE
This Thursday don’t miss the opportunity to get some really great free ice cream. Cold Stone Creamery is celebrating its 9th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social. With only two locations Lincoln Square residents are lucky enough to have a location near the corner of Lincoln and Leland. The social will last from 5pm to 8pm. Today officials from the National Archives and Record Association (NARA) and Chicago History Museum meet to discuss personal papers from the federal prosecutor who finally incarcerated Al Capone for tax evasion. The family chose to donate the papers to the Chicago History Museum but NARA wants to complement the "more formal" federal case files from the Prohibition era that NARA already maintains at its Great Lakes regional office at 7358 S. Pulaski. Regardless of where the papers make a home the amount of information contained in them shows what went on behind the scenes of this investigation.
LINCOLN PARK
It is with a heavy heart that I report Hoagie Hut in Lincoln Park will be closing its doors after this Thursday. If you have an opportunity get over there today or tomorrow to taste one of those unique Chicago neighborhood traditions. There is no news on when or if the local spot will re-open its doors. One thing is for sure the late night spot will be sorely missed by neighborhood revelers.
EVANSTON
We hear sad stories of the current economy through multiple news outlets but in this instance this is a community giving back to those who are experiencing the challenges for the first time. Local resident Brek Peterson helped start Family Promise of Chicago North Shore a member of the national non-profit Family Promise. With help from local faith groups the organization is designed to keep the children of homeless families from dropping out of school while helping adults seek employment or save money to get back on their feet. Essentially Family Promise offers the bridge that most families need to get back on their feet. Family Promise invites volunteers of all ages to help out.
