Part of Chicago Magazine’s Hot 10 List for October is The Portage Restaurant and Bar. Known for its reimagined comfort food The Portage touts itself as a Gastropub Where Gastronomy and Good Times Come Together. Being nominated to the Hot List has definitely put this neighborhood location on the foodie list for Chicago. Be sure to call ahead for reservations.

LAKEVIEW

Blokes and Birds take two. Back in May it was announced that this gastropub with 70s and 80s British rock music playing the background would open. The opening never really happened and now it’s officially planned for mid-October. The concept of an English gastropub in the sea of Irish pubs in the vicinity will give this new locale a unique presence in the neighborhood.

WEST LOOP

Items that are free always taste better. This weekend you get the best of both worlds when the number one ice cream in Chicago is being offered one scoop at a time with the Cooking Channel at the French Market. Capannari Ice Cream takes a visit from the suburb of Mt. Prospect to showcase their wares on Saturday from 11am to 6pm and again on Monday September 27 from 4pm to 5:30pm at the Holiday Inn at 350 West Mart Center.

OLD TOWN

This past Monday a new steakhouse claimed its new home. Chicago Cut Steakhouse touts a dual entrance building at 300 N. LaSalle which is at LaSalle and the Chicago River. Entering through the back entrance you’ll get an opportunity to view the kitchen fast at work and the caves where the steaks are dry-aging. With added technology of iPad wine menus you can enjoy the current warmer weather on the riverside patio.

OAK PARK

Starting Thursday September 23 the Oak Park Public Library will feature the Mark Twain Film Festival. This lecture series led by film historian Doug Deuchler will take you through screenings of films of Twain and his novels. Each session will begin at 2pm with discussion of the film(s) afterward. This festival is part of the "Celebrating Twain: One Author Three Communities" commemoration sponsored by Oak Park River Forest and Forest Park.
