THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO – SUMMER CONTINUES TO HEAT-UP IN CHICAGO!

While the hot summer days of August continue this weekend Chicagoans have many refreshing and enjoyable activities to choose from.

Two major events in town this weekend are –

Now in its 52nd year the Chicago Air & Water Show kicks off its weekend activities at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday with actor Vince Vaughn teaming up with the Golden Knights for a tandem parachute jump. Great seats can be had at North Avenue Beach where this event is held or at Oak Street Beach both located in the Lincoln Park neighborhood. A few of this year’s highlights are the Blue Angels the Golden Knights and the Leap Frogs parachute teams the Lima Lima Flight Team the Viper West F-16 demonstration team and much more. Please note that the air and water portions are now combined into one continuous show.

Now in its 81st year the Bud Billiken Parade & Picnic kicks off at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at 39th Street and South Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Grand Marshal this year is Valarie Jarrett Senior Adviser to President Barack Obama. This annual tradition has developed into one of Chicago’s premier Back-to-School events. Stick around for the post-parade activities at the end of the parade’s route in Washington Park. This is a large picnic with food music local entertainment free give-a-ways and much more.

On a smaller scale there are the usual Chicago neighborhood festivals many of which are cultural celebrations this weekend –

New to the scene this year is the Rockin’ on the River Ribfest in the Warehouse District neighborhood at 560 W. Grand Avenue (at the river). Some local spots serving up their ribs are Smoke Daddy Uncle Bub’s BBQ Bar-B-Que Bob’s plus other national joints. Live music and DJ Sye Young provide the entertainment portion. Purchase a VIP ticket which includes a buffet premium band viewing and a cash bar.

Wrigleyville Summerfest is back for its 8th annual street fest in the Lakeview neighborhood at Seminary Avenue and School Street with food and beer vendors live music and much more.

The Armenian Fest which takes place in the Galewood/Montclare neighborhood at 6700 W. Diversey Avenue will feature $12 kebab dinners homemade pastries live music by the Hye Vibes a bags tournament raffles a silent auction kids’ games and more at their 35th annual indoor-outdoor party.

The Chicago Korean Festival which takes place in the North Park neighborhood at 3200 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue between Kimball and Kedzie Avenues will feature food vendors kids’ activities live music a singing contest a Miss Korean Festival Queen contest and much more at their 15th annual cultural event.

Now in its 104th year the Croatian Fest takes place this Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. in the Bridgeport neighborhood at 2800 S. Princeton Avenue. This Old World tradition features a huge roast of 100 whole pigs and lambs along with live music dance performances a parade (10:30 a.m.) homemade Croatian foods and much more.

Ginza Holiday a Japanese indoor-outdoor cultural celebration takes place in the Lincoln Park neighborhood at 435 W. Menomonee Street and will feature food beer and merchandise vendors craft demonstrations martial arts demonstrations as well as live music from Yoko Noge’s Japanesque Band at their 55th annual event.

All fested out? Portage Theater will be featuring Terror in the Aisles 6 this Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Films being presented are "Tales from the Darkside: The Movie" and "Clive Barker’s Book of Blood" along with feature film "Creep Show" and several short films as well. Vendors and a charity auction for Vital Bridges will also be on hand.
