ROGERS PARK
Jessie Oloroso is 32 and grew up in Rogers Park. She attended Johnson & Wales culinary school in Rhode Island. Last year she began making remarkable ice cream all day by herself. She was pastry chef for Stephanie Izard and Scylla restaurant-before Izard became "Top Chef" and Scylla closed (in 2007).
Now she is turning out 60 gallons a week of inventive gelato and sorbet for local restaurants and shops and sells 20 of her flavors by the scoop which include whiskey goat cheese and caramel.
Oloroso calls her line Black Dog Gelato and recently began selling it on a retail level at Cippolina 1543 N. Damen Ave. She plans on opening a Black Dog ice cream shop sometime later this year in Rogers Park. Click here to read the entire article.
LOGAN SQUARE
Sunday Parkways runs along Chicago’s boulevards connecting Logan Square Humboldt Park Garfield Park North Lawndale and Little Village. This event will be held on Oct. 5 and 26 and will close streets to cars from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and open them for walking biking skating dancing and playing. It is being sponsored by the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation. Go to just north of Madison Street along Central Park Avenue Franklin Street Sacramento Avenue Palmer Street and Kedzie Avenue on Oct. 5. NAPERVILLE
Just because the Hammerschmidt House was denied landmark status this week doesn’t mean the Naperville mansion will soon be history.
The City Council cast a 5-3 vote Tuesday night to deny historic status to the Queen Anne home built in 1893. Many people still want to keep it around despite an estimated cost of $2 million to buy and restore it.
Several area residents who are trying to save the home at 432 E. Chicago Ave. petitioned to have it declared a landmark in hopes of putting off the wrecking ball. Although the city’s Historic Sites Commission recommended in August to have it designated as such the City Council denied that status because property owners Chris and Susan Cobb oppose it and the mansion sits outside the city’s historic district.
