CITY OF CHICAGO TO OFFER HIGH-TECH EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION – YOU CAN GET A TEXT!

NEW CHICAGO EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM ADDS TEXT MESSAGING TO EXISTING PHONE VOICE MAIL PROGRAM!

If there is an emergency in the City of Chicago – hazardous materials spill flood or tornado snowstorm or heatwave fire and the like – the city already has the capability to send a broadcast message to your home phone – listed or unlisted. It is used as you might imagine rarely.

Now the city has added text message alerts as an option to reach you.

Anyone registering for the program will receive emergency texts via their cell phone or PDA. Here is the Notify Chicago site on which you can register for the service.

"It is very critical for public safety agencies do their part to stay in tune with the latest tools to keep the residents safe" said Chicago Mayor Richard Daley.

Chicago residency is NOT required! Officials also said the program would welcome those from the suburbs who work in the city to sign on as well as those living outside city limits who might have family living in Chicago. The service may be especially helpful for those with elderly family members here.
