For quite some time the corridor of Wabash Avenue under the "L" tracks was ridiculed as being an alley between State Street and Michigan Avenue. It’s a noisy semi-cave flanked by shabby offices and empty storefronts. People would disappear after work hours and the street was vacant on weekends.

Now Wabash from Lake to Van Buren Streets is seeing a revival of new businesses and residences as developers hope to attract people who will shop live work and play on the street now in transition. Already it is meeting with the approval of many.

Changes and expansions are finally moving forward on CTA’s Yellow Line. It currently consists of just two stops: the Dempster Station in Skokie and the Howard Station in Chicago’s Rogers Park.

Plans are underway for adding up to two new stops on the line also known as the Skokie Swift. Officials at the Chicago Transit Authority also are deciding whether to make the weekend service permanent which began on a trial basis in late March.

A newly approved stop already has been added for Oakton Street in downtown Skokie. Village officials expect to meet Aug. 27 to review a design for the station. Click here for additional information.

The inaugural Tribune Shake ‘n Pedal was a round trip from Highland Park to Beverly in search of four great chocolate shakes. It was spaced out for participants to pedal from one stop to the next so they wouldn’t get too sick in between.

The winner was Scooter’s by a very small margin. Scooter’s Frozen Custard (1658 W. Belmont Ave. in Lakeview). The shakes are so thick you can barely use a straw. The treat is a mountain of frozen custard somehow mysteriously condensed into a container topped with chocolate goodness and whipped cream.

NAPERVILLE

Senator Kirk Dillard of Naperville requested a moment of silence on the Senate floor Tuesday to honor the memories of two fallen soldiers. Marine Lance Cpl. Tony Mihalo and Army Cpl. James Hale were recently killed while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq respectively.

"Since we left here last week we lost two servicemen from Naperville back-to-back. One in Afghanistan and one in Iraq" Dillard said. "This is a busy time here – a historic time. But we just need to put things into perspective. Naperville has lost nine service men and women since the conflict in the Middle East began. I ask for a moment of silence not only for these two men and their families but for all of us who have loved ones and friends serving their country overseas."
