THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO – MEMORIAL DAY FUN
The Chicago Memorial Day Wreath Laying Ceremony along with the Parade is scheduled for this Saturday. The morning starts with Wreath Laying Ceremony at 11 a.m. on Daley Plaza at the Eternal Flame (Dearborn and Washington Streets). The parade will start at 12:00 (noon) and continue to head on down south on State Street from Wacker Street to Van Buren Street.
Let’s not forget my favorite that signals the start of the summer season – fireworks and sailing.
Burnham Harbor which is in Chicago’s Museum Campus (near Soldier Field) hosts a two hour cruise on a traditional "Tall Ship" followed by a great fireworks show just off Navy Pier! The ship an old fashioned traditional (wood) schooner called The Red Witch sets sail at 7:30pm every Wednesday and 8:00pm on Saturday. Boarding is 15 minutes prior to departure. Reservations are strongly recommended but are not required. Reservations can be made online here or by phone.
If a Tall Ship is not your cup of tea then take a Shoreline Memorial Day Cruise to watch the fireworks. The cruise departs Saturday at 9:30 pm with fireworks at 10:15. For more information click here.
Though this weekend tends to mark the start of picnic and travel season for most of us let’s not forget to take some time to honor our service men and women who defend our great country. I cannot think of a better way to do that than by visiting the Cost of Freedom Tribute – Vietnam Traveling Wall located at The Schaumburg Flyers Stadium.
The Cost of Freedom which currently includes the Vietnam Traveling Wall also pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives during Iraq Afghanistan WW II Korea 911 and Public Safety. Don’t forget to remember all our service personnel over the Memorial Weekend May 23-26 2008.
