LIL’ BUDDY’S BLOG: City of Chicago to Get Tough on Motorists Under New Bicycle Ordinance!

THE CHICAGO IL REAL ESTATE MARKET AND OTHER THINGS CHICAGO FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF A LITTLE WHITE DOG!

Buddy Counts His Money - November 2007I’m saving my money you dogs! Would like a brand new bike in time for cycling this Spring here in Chicago. You know there aren’t too many nice spring days here so you have to take advantage of the ones you have!

My new bike will be a 25-speed Racing Bike. Reflective tape and lights back and front for safety. One of those water bottle holders on the frame for when I start to pant. And don’t forget the XM Radio Receiver so I can jam while I cycle.

If they’re nice to me I might consider adding a human side car to cart Team Leader Dean and my Human Momma Sue along with me!

Hey seriously though our Mayor Daley an avid cyclist himself is out to make the City of Chicago the most bike friendly city in North America. To help do that Chicago has just passed tough laws fining motorists for irresponsible behavior around those cycling.

Under new oridinances passed Wednesday by the Chicago City Council motorists who make a turn in front of someone riding a bicycle or pass within three feet of a cyclist or block street-marked bicycle lanes can be fined between $150 and $500 for each violation. Those that open their car door in front of a passing bike – referred to as "dooring" by cyclists can also be fined.

According to Da’ Mayor (I am SUCH a CHICAGO DOG) "More than 6000 crashes between bicycles and motor vehicles were reported in Chicago between 2001 and 2005. Unfortunately 30 bicyclists were killed. These new laws will help prevent injuries and save lives."

Earlier this month a cyclist riding in a group was struck and killed by a motorist while crossing Irving Park Road at Lincoln Avenue in Chicago’s North Center Neighborhood. Although the driver was not charged this pointed up the dangers of cyclists and motorists sharing the roads in the city.

Many cyclists feel the new laws will be hard to enforce. But cyclists and motorists alike feel that better care need by taken by both those on a bike and those in a car this spring and summer cycling season.

I would heartily agree – this Little White Dog wants to have all four paws intact all summer long when I take to the road!

"Get your motor running. . . " oh no I’m not THAT kind of biker. But you never know with a little training "Evil KeBuddy" can take to the stunt tracks soon!

Naaah!

Happy Cycling – but Be Real Careful Out There – especially if you spot a Little White Dog on a Racing Bike!
