We’ve talked before about the correct way to water your lawn. One inch water per week Is sufficient for most lawns and gardens. Water in the early morning if at all possible. If you must water later in the day make sure the plants have time to dry before nightfall. If plants

Are left wet overnight fungus can develop. Keep an eye on any plants planted within the last two years as these may need more water and care until fully established.

By now your tomatoes and other vegetables in the garden will be getting ready to pick.

I’ve already had cucumbers and sweet peppers. Keep the garden producing throughout the rest of the summer by fertilizing every two weeks. Mix a granular fertilizer such as Miracle Grow with water in your watering can. Water the leaves and the entire plant. This is called foliar feeding. The leaves will soak in the nutrients as well as the roots.

The Chicagoland area has experienced varying amounts of rain this season. It’s a good Idea to give your trees and shrubs a good watering periodically with the hose. Take off the nozzle and trickle the water at the base of the tree or bush. Slowly water for a couple of hours. This slow soaking is best.

With a little care your garden and lawn will thrive this summer and provide your family with many hours of summertime enjoyment.
