Make sure you are watering your lawn regularly during this dry spell were having now in Chicago. Remember: one long deep watering – roughly one inch of water!

Also do not cut your lawn too short! This is especially important during dry spells but is a good idea all the time. Grass cut too short will also have short roots. About two to two and a half inches is best. It’s also recommended to change the direction of your mowing. Mowing your lawn in the same pattern every time tends to make the lawn grow in the same direction.

Now is a good time for your second fertilizer treatment. Make sure you water your lawn the day before you apply fertilizer. Water again the day after you fertilize. This helps the fertilizer work more effectively. Remember to never apply fertilizers or other lawn chemicals to completely dry grass!

Much of the soil in our area contains heavy clay. Your evergreen trees shrubs and bushes may benefit from an acid treatment. Miracid Soil Acidifier works well. This also feeds the plant.
