KATHY’S HOME & GARDEN TIPS – HOW TO CREATE MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT WINDOWS

Kathleen Weaver Zech - Dean's Team Director of Buyers Agency ServicesThere are many extremely efficient windows on the market in many styles unfortunately they can be costly. There is an inexpensive solution covering the inside of the windows to cut drafts and prevent heat loss. Now before you dismiss this idea remembering from years ago the first generations of film products today are much more efficient and attractive.

The most cost efficient type is simple film that is attached to the window frame with double sided tape and shrunk to a tight fit using a blow dryer. This film is sold in rolls and sheets that can be cut to fit the dimensions of any window you choose. The drawbacks to this product are these since the entire inside of the window is sealed you cannot open the window when the film is in place and also the residue from the two sided tape can be difficult to remove. Try a little vegetable oil to help remove the residue without damaging the finish of the window frame.

Now we have available film that is coated with a thin and nearly invisible metal that helps to reduce infrared heat transfer from the inside. This is the same technology used in low emissivity (low-E) double-paned replacement windows. Low-E is applied directly onto the inside of the window pane. Removal is simple and clean-up easy.

Window film is an easy weekend project. There are many styles and patterns to choose from so you can decorate and save heat at the same time.

Everyone have a safe and blessed Christmas and a Happy New Year!!
