This last weekend in June, not only will we be topping off our Pride Month celebrations, but we’ll also be celebrating the “official” start of the summer season!

It’s all about celebrating Chicago’s LGBTQ+ community when Pride in the Park returns to Grant Park’s Butler Field (South Lake Shore Dr. and East Monroe St.) in The Loop this Saturday (3 p.m.-10 p.m.) for its third festive year.  This annual outdoor music festival will feature a non-stop lineup of top national and local music headliners along with an impressive DJ roster who will have everyone dancing.  Plus, there will be plenty of fantastic food, artists, merchandise vendors, and more to make this festival the perfect party!

Navy Pier’s annual full-day celebration of LGBTQ+ culture is back with Navy Pier Pride this Saturday (11 a.m.-11 p.m.) in the Streeterville neighborhood (600 E. Grand Ave.).  This free event celebrates diversity, inclusivity, and support for the LGBTQ+ community with festivities that include live music, performances from local LGBTQ+ artists, educational programs, on-site resources from community partners, and more!

Boat owners are invited to decorate their boat in Pride Colors and partake this Saturday in Pride Flotilla (weather permitting).  A pre-parade circle will begin north of the Playpen at 12:30 p.m. with the parade commencing at 1:00 p.m. and then proceeding North along the coast to Kathy Osterman Beach.  Those of us without a boat can soak in the colorful action at either Ohio Street, Oak Street, or North Avenue Beaches!

Celebrating all different kinds of love, Chicago’s Pride Bar Crawl takes place Saturday (12 p.m.-6 p.m.) at some of Wrigleyville’s best bars.  As usual, tickets include admission to all participating bars, a free brunch buffet, gift cards to be used on the crawl, giveaways, and more!  It’s a party for everyone and not to be missed!!

Last by not least, the Chicago Pride Parade returns to the streets of the Uptown and Lakeview neighborhoods this Sunday.  The parade features 150 registered entries which includes floats, performance groups, a marching band, decorated vehicles, and walking contingents.  The parade will step off at 12:00 p.m. at the corner of Montrose and Broadway as spectators gather along the parade’s usual route.  You may want to stake out your spot early along the route as this parade can attract over one million attendees!

The Logan Square Arts Festival will be kicking off the first official weekend of the summer on Saturday and Sunday (12 p.m.-10 p.m.) at 3150 W. Logan Boulevard at Kedzie and Milwaukee Avenues in the Logan Square neighborhood.  This event is a celebration of the art, music, and culture reflecting the diversity and vitality of this neighborhood.  Once again, stages, tents, and food trucks will spring up around the Illinois Centennial Monument with artists of varying disciplines, a great line-up of music, local craft vendors, food, and beer!

Chicago’s Dragon Boat Race for Literacy takes place this Saturday (8 a.m.-5 p.m.) at the Ping Tom Memorial Park (300 W. 19th St.) in Chinatown.  This event is a family-fun activity featuring a lion dance opening ceremony, dragon boat races, cultural performances, exhibition booths, and kids’ activities promoting Asian culture and helping the neighborhood literacy programs!

Neighborhood News: A Rite of Passage at Taste of Chicago

When I was young, Taste of Chicago was a rite of passage. Not only could you try foods from Chicago’s communities, and actually see the musical performers we couldn’t afford for free (Stevie Wonder and John Mayer come to mind)… if you could drink and stack a number of colorful beer cups from the ubiquitous beer vendors, you ‘proved’ that you were once, and for all, an adult

HOLD ON…I’m joking about the beer cups! Except about them being a rite of passage. They were.

Without Taste of Chicago, I might never have known the delicious coldness of an Original Rainbow Cone. Or the creaminess of Eli’s Cheesecake. Or the spices of authentic Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Or those giant BBQ turkey legs, which have been missing since 2010. (source: DNAInfo) I miss them! 

Deep dish pizza from Giordano’s may have been as exotic as I could get in my hometown. Taste of Chicago expanded my palate at very low prices, all while listening to the best music of the day. 

Beginnings-One Steamy Day on Michigan Avenue 

The first Taste of Chicago took place on July 4, 1980, on Michigan Avenue, aka ‘The Magnificent Mile.’ It came about after restauranteur Arnie Morton persuaded then-Chicago mayor Jane Byrne and Lois Weisberg, Commissioner of Cultural Affairs, to block it off for the holiday. Over 250,000 people attended (nearly tripling all expectations), sampling hot dogs, ribs, and Italian ice. Food and soda sales grossing $300,000, as Wikipedia sources note. Taste of Chicago far exceeded any  expectations the City of Chicago had. 

According to DNAInfo.com, the original vendors included Aunt Diana’s Old Fashioned Fudge, Fireplace Inn, Gaylord India, Guey Lon, Lawry’s The Prime Rib, Leon’s BBQ, Nancy’s Pizza and the Pump Room. 

And Just Like That… 

In the following decades, the restaurant selections grew from 10 to 70. DNAInfo says that Sam ‘Chizborger, chizborger’ Sianis, of Billy Goat Tavern, didn’t have a booth the first year, but when they moved The Taste to Grant Park, his booth became a staple. 

Mayor Byrne and Commissioner Weisberg knew they were on to something. In the years prior to The Taste, Chicagofest had brought Chicago’s communities together at Navy Pier in a celebration of all forms of music—jazz, pop, heavy metal, soul, and r&b. Even Frank Sinatra made an appearance! Now, they combined the two festivals into one large music and food extravaganza. The fest grew from one day to more than 10 in the 90’s and 00’s. 

For the next three decades, the fest grew in worldwide popularity, as Chicago’s unique restaurant culture came to fruition with several Michelin-starred, James Beard award-winning restaurants joined erstwhile favorites like Gene & Georgetti’s. 

According to a Chicago Tribune article, in 1997, a record 3.46 million people spent $12 million, munching on 272,000 slices of pizza, 253,405 ears of corn, 117,000 frozen bananas, 31,000 lobster tails and 15,000 stuffed artichokes. In 1999, the record was broken again, as 3.68 million attended. 

Today…

The pandemic, waning attendance, and concerns about cost-effectiveness among the vendors necessitated several changes to The Taste. While it’s still the largest food and music festival in the world, TimeOut Chicago noted that the 2023 edition will feature smaller, day-long festivals in neighborhoods across the city, with a lineup of local restaurants and live music. 

Entry to all Taste of Chicago events is still free, and vendors will accept cash and credit cards.

Taste of Chicago-Humbolt Park this weekend! 

The single-day Taste of Chicago events will be held:

  • Saturday, June 24 in  Humboldt Park, 1440 N. Humboldt Boulevard, from 11am-9pm

Vendors include African Food Palace, Banato, Chicago’s Doghouse, El Azteca Sanchez, Robinson No.1 Ribs, and Tandoor Char. Chicago House Music Festival performers include “Queen! For A Day” featuring Robert Owen’s Live, with Michael Serafini and Garret David. 

  • Saturday, July 15 in Pullman Park 11101 S. Cottage Grove
  • Saturday, August 5 in Chicago Lawn, Marquette Park, 6743 S. Kedzie Avenue

Taste of Chicago 2023 concludes with a three-day festival in Grant Park from September 8-10, where you’ll find a variety of food vendors in addition to live entertainment. Keep your eyes on this website for announcements about food vendors and music lineups!

Chicago’s 53rd Annual Pride Parade steps off at Broadway and Montrose noon this Sunday, June 25, with a four-mile procession through Northalsted, Uptown, Lakeview, and Lincoln Park. 

You may be asking yourself… where to eat before the parade? Dean’s Team Chicago has a suggestion…at Rewired Pizza Café and Bar in Edgewater. 

This month, their special Pride menu is filled with rainbow-hued ‘gay deviled eggs,rainbow cake, Gay IPA from local brewery Marz, and Rewired’s signature Pride lattes with edible glitter.

Or The Pancakes Lola Wants, with fresh berries, powdered sugar, and real maple syrup. And if you dare… Mrs. Lovett’s Quiche, with a different selection daily. Sweeney Todd would be proud! With these selections, ala carte sides sound promising, with Kinky Fruit and West Side Side Salad.

Chicago Home and Lifestyles – Stop Overthinking

We are all trying to be good leaders, whether we’re leading in the workplace or our own families. We know that good leaders are decisive, confident and quick thinkers. We try to be like this, but often fall into the trap of overthinking and getting into a spiral of inaction worrying about every decision. Here are some ways to stop this spiral and make informed decisions.

Assess all relevant information available. Once you have done that and made a decision, let it be final. Ruminating about the decision is pointless and damaging. Only go back to your conclusion if new information comes to light. 

Don’t always assume the worst. Many times, we think there are ulterior motives behind the information we are receiving. Most of the time this is not true. Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence. What you’re being given is usually neutral, if not actually well intended, so don’t read more into it. 

Remember: we can’t know everything! You can’t read minds, so overthinking just wastes time. Embrace uncertainty. It seems to make us happier to fill blanks with garbage rather than to just be uncertain. Observe uncertainty, don’t overreact to it. 

Measure the stakes. Overthinking can turn a molehill into a mountain. Ask yourself: what is the probability that I make the wrong decision? Actually, not very high. What is the real cost of being wrong? If you can lower the stakes in your decision, you can usually get unstuck. 

Get outside of your head for a bit. Take joy in what’s going on around you. Switch gears and connect. It can be a dark place in your head when you dwell on uncertainties — so get out and touch some grass!

9 Kitchen Design Mistakes to Avoid

No matter how amazing and comfortable the rest of your home may be, there’s something about the kitchen that has everyone congregating to it. No doubt, your kitchen is the hardest working space your home, and should be designed to help make it as efficient as possible. And considering how much of an effect the kitchen has on the overall value of your property, you’d be well advised to make sure its design and style are carefully considered.

After flipping through countless home interior magazines and navigating through Houzz and Pinterest, you’ve probably got a solid idea of what you want your new kitchen to look like. But before you start the process, you’ve got to have a detailed plan in place, which includes things that need to be done, as well as things that you absolutely must avoid.

Here are a few kitchen design mistakes to steer clear of.

1. Not Planning For Adequate Storage Space

Unless you plan on leaving all your pots, pans, dishes and glassware on the counter (which you shouldn’t), you’re going to need to seriously think about adding enough storage to keep all of your kitchen belongings out of sight. And don’t forget about your dry foods and knickknacks that will also need to have a home. Whether your storage takes the form of extras drawers, pantries, or cabinets, you need to be certain that it is adequate enough to tuck everything neatly without having to cram everything into a tight space.

2. Not Including Enough Counter Space

The amount of space that you’ve got on your countertops is equally as important as your storage space. After all, it’s where you’ll be prepping your meals and housing small appliances like your blender, toaster, and coffee machine. And don’ forget about any decorative elements that you may want to have out on your counter to boost the style factor of the room. Without adequate space on your countertops, you’ll find your kitchen will become cluttered really quickly and easily.

3. Skimping on Lighting

If you want to clearly see what you’re doing as you’re preparing dinner, you’re going to need excellent lighting in the kitchen. But many homeowners skimp on lighting in this space for some reason, and often leave it to one solitary central light fixture to provide the lighting needed. Instead, the lighting in your kitchen should be varied, and include both task lighting and fixtures meant specifically for creating ambience.

Consider illuminating the overall space with pot lights, and install pendant lights over your kitchen island. You may also want to install undercabinet lighting to illuminate your counter as you handle food, and hang a chandelier over the dinner table. Layering your lighting in this fashion can provide with both the right amount of lighting needed to whip up your famous dish, while giving you the flexibility to create a specific atmosphere in the space.

4. Lacking Proper Ventilation

All those fumes from your boiled eggs or grilled salmon have to go somewhere, or else you’ll be left with unpleasant smells that will linger for hours. Not only that, but if you have a gas stove, these fumes can go from unpleasant to downright dangerous. That’s where proper ventilation comes into play, which is a critical component to consider in the planning stages of a kitchen design. Not only will an adequate ventilation system help keep the air in your kitchen fresh, it’ll also help to lengthen the lifespan of your appliances. 

5. Forgetting About the ‘Kitchen Triangle’

It would be pretty awkward and annoying to have to dodge obstacles to bring food items from your fridge to your stovetop. That’s why the kitchen triangle should always be kept in check during a kitchen design. This layout basically links the three most used areas of the kitchen: the stove, fridge, and sink.

Out of all these components, the sink, in particular, is most often used, and should have direct access to both the fridge and stove. Tight walkways, cabinet doors that swing open the wrong way, and improperly situated islands can mess this system up big time. Straying from the kitchen triangle too much can make the room must less efficient.

6. Misjudging the Island

Having an island in the kitchen can offer you additional counter space and an added spot to eat and hang out. But your kitchen’s size and layout will dictate the size and location of an island, as well as whether or not one can even effectively exist. The kitchen is a working space, so anything that gets in the way of functional flow will just cause problems.

If the island is too big, or is not located in an ideal spot, you’ll cut off proper flow in and around the space. Ideally, there should be between 42 and 48 inches of open area surrounding kitchen islands. For it to be of any use, the island should be at least three by five feet in dimension, and your kitchen should be a minimum of 13 feet wide.

7. Going Too Trendy

Unless you’re planning on revamping your kitchen every few years, you’d be better off sticking to a design that’s not overly trendy. While you still want to be modern and innovative, you also don’t want to be so quirky that the appeal of your kitchen will wear off you in the near future.

Rose Quartz and Serenity might be Pantone’s choice of colors of the year, but how long these pastel hues stay on trend in the next few years is up for debate. No one says you can’t be bold in your color choices, but just be sure to use them in non-permanent ways, such as with your towels or decorative accessories.

And when it comes to kitchen design, carefully consider the styles you choose for your trim, cabinet materials, finishes, countertops, and flooring. You might think you’re certain that the latest out-there trends will tickle your fancy for the long-term, but you never know when your tastes will change, or if you ever plan on selling your home in the near future to buyers that may not necessarily have the same tastes.

8. Forgetting About the Trash

Your kitchen design can be sleek and impressive, but the look of this space can easily be thrown off with the presence of a trash can. Nothing is more off-putting than the sight of garbage, so be sure that you consider a spot where you garbage bin can be tucked away in a spot that’s easy to access.

Not only is the spot for a trash can up for consideration, so is a bin for your recyclables. One modern way that interior designers and homeowners are tackling this issue is by installing a dual cabinet pull-out that features one bin for the trash, and another for the recyclables. This offers easier access, rather than having to reach under the cabinet and hoping that your toss made the bin. 

9. Not Including Enough Electrical Outlets

Think about all the little appliances that you’ll be using in the kitchen at various stations. From your toaster, to the cake mixer, to the blender, all these items need an outlet to be plugged into. And what about your smartphone and tablet? Odds are the kitchen counter will be the place to recharge these gadgets. For that reason, make sure you’ve installed enough outlets to accommodate all the things that will need to be plugged in.

Spending the time considering all these factors in the planning stages can help save you plenty of hassles after the fact. Make sure you’ve considered all the components that go into making a kitchen great, and avoid all these mistakes that can wreak havoc on your kitchen design.

THIS WEEKEND IN CHICAGO – Dads Being Celebrated on Father’s Day Weekend!

It’s Father’s Day Weekend here in Chicago, and as usual, there’s no shortage of events to celebrate and spend some time with your dad!

The 8th annual Craft Brews Beer Festival takes place this Saturday (7 p.m.-10 p.m.) at the Lincoln Park Zoo (2001 N. Clark St.) between Cannon Drive and Fullerton Parkway in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.  Guests will have the opportunity to sample over 100 craft beers, ciders, and non-alcoholic options as well as enjoy food for purchase, listen to live music, play lawn games, and wander around the premises after hours viewing the zoo’s amazing animals!  A General Admission ticket includes tickets for 20 three-ounce tastings and a Craft Brews souvenir tasting glass.

The Taste of Randolph returns for its 26th anniversary this Saturday and Sunday (12 p.m.-10 p.m.) to 900 West Randolph Street in the West Loop.  This iconic street festival boasts six blocks of food from more than 16 local restaurants, drinks, two stages packed with live music, and a DJ stage hosted by local DJ Derrick Carter.  It’s said to be the culinary adventure of the summer!

Taking place at Midway Plaisance (1130 Midway Plaisance North) between Woodlawn and Ellis Avenues in the Hyde Park neighborhood this Saturday and Sunday (12 p.m.-10 p.m.) is the Hyde Park Summer Fest.  This two-day music festival will host a lineup of performers, DJs, and food from local restaurants along with retail/artist and non-profit vendors for a weekend of music, community, and a celebration of Chicago culture!

SailGP returns to Navy Pier (600 E. Grand Ave.) in the Streeterville neighborhood this Saturday (3 p.m.) for a thrilling sailing competition on Lake Michigan.  Ten national teams battle it out on the F50 catamaran which is a race boat that “flies” out of the water and reaches speeds in excess of 60 mph!  Plus, the east end of the Pier will be transformed into a viewing stadium along with grandstand seating, and big screens with live commentary and entertainment!!

One of the city’s biggest art fairs of the summer, the Gold Coast Art Fair, takes place this Saturday and Sunday (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) at Grant Park’s Butler Field in The Loop.  Treat dad and yourself to 200+ juried artists from around the country for a shoppable art experience, enjoy live music on three stages, and have some delicious food, beer, wine, and sangria at three festival oases.  New this year are on-site painting classes for adults and kids as well as a Kids Art Stop where they can learn more about the art-making process from the artists themselves!

Also taking place this Saturday and Sunday (11 a.m.-10 p.m.) is the 22nd annual Chicago Pride Fest on Halsted Street at Waveland Avenue in the Northalsted neighborhood.  This street festival features live music on three stages, over 150 food and merchandise vendors, guest speakers, dance exhibitions, a high heel race for prizes, and more.  Plus, the Proud Pet Parade steps off Sunday at 12:30 p.m. from the North Stage with Miss Foozie as she leads the contestants to the Winners presentation at the South Stage at 1:00 p.m. for prizes and fun!

Lastly, dad may enjoy taking in a baseball game at either Wrigley Field where the Chicago Cubs will host the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday (1:20 p.m.) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.), or at Impact Field in Rosemont where the Chicago Dogs will host the Kansas City Monarchs on Saturday (6 p.m.), which also happens to be Mardi Gras theme night, and Sunday (3 p.m.).

Neighborhood News: Streeterville’s Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates cultures, creativity

Museum Of Contemporary Art Chicago (MCA) in Chicago

While the Art Institute of Chicago houses the works of art masters through the centuries, one museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago, 220 E. Chicago Avenue, is one of the largest museums in the world displaying the works of contemporary masters. 

Take, for example, their latest exhibition, Gary Simmons: Public Enemy,which opened Tuesday and runs through October 1. Just in time for Juneteenth, in this exhibit, Simmons exposes and analyzes histories of racism inscribed in US visual culture, and is the first comprehensive career survey of his work. As the website states, it’s not the first time he has explored such topics. Over the course of his 35-year career, Simmons has revealed traces of these histories in the fields of sports, cinema, literature, music, and architecture and urbanism, while drawing heavily on popular genres such as hip-hop, horror, and science fiction. 

In a recent interview with Vocalo, explaining his motivation to the Los Angeles Times, Simmons shared, “I started to think about the cartoons that parents would sit you down in front of then walk away, almost letting the television babysit you. I was looking at Dumbo. 

The crows had this prominent role in teaching Dumbo how to fly, but they were highly racialized and very stereotypical. I talked to a cross-section of different people about their memories of Dumbo and I realized that the memories kind of broke down along racial lines. And I thought, ‘Wow, this is very interesting that people that look like me remember the racialized racist images and white folks didn’t.”

A Brief History of MCA Chicago 

MCA Chicagoopened in fall 1967 in a small space at 237 East Ontario Street that had served as the corporate offices of Playboy Enterprises, according to Wikipedia sources.Initially, the museum was conceived primarily as a space for temporary exhibitions, in the German kunsthalle model. 

However, in 1974, the museum began acquiring a permanent collection of contemporary art objects created after 1945, hosting several notable debut exhibitions, including Frida Kahlo’s first U.S. exhibition and Jeff Koons’first solo museum exhibition. Koons later presented an exhibit at the museum that broke the museum’s attendance record. The current record for the most-attended exhibition is the 2017 exhibition of Takashi Murakami.

 Other modern collections at the museum include the works of Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, and Kara Walker, and encompassing a wide variety of mediums: late surrealism, pop art, minimalism, and conceptual art; contemporary painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, and related media.

Today: A Cornucopia of Arts

MCA Chicago also presents dance, theater, music, and multidisciplinary arts. On Tuesdays at the Terrace, when MCA is open late and admission is free for Illinois residents, they host free concerts highlighting Chicago artists on their outdoor terrace, paying tribute to jazz, blues, and soul, among others. 

A Juneteenth Celebration at MCA! 

Juneteenth marks the day all enslaved people were ensured to be freed. On Friday, June 16 from 5pm-9pm, MCA is hosting its Third Annual Juneteenth Freedom Market.  As Choose Chicago says, the market includes over 50 local Black-owned businesses participating, and entertainment from the renowned 40+ Double Dutch Club, an open art studio experience + complimentary sample wine tastings with Chicago’s Raspy Rivera X Michael Lavelle.

Restaurant Review: Gold Coast’s Adalina celebrates Father’s Day, Italian-style!

With Father’s Day coming up this Sunday (June 18), it’s time to celebrate the people who raised you! 

One restaurant going all-out is Adalina, located inside the No. 9 Walton building on the Gold Coast. What is Adalina? 

Opened nearly two years ago and led by Michelin-starred chef Soo Ahn, previously with Band of Bohemia, Adalina’s menu, according to their website,  “creates a balance between Northern and Southern cuisine, providing expertly staged shared plates along with strong statement items that satisfy a table.”

For a great dinner starter, try their Charred Octopus, served with fingerling potatoes, Sicilian pistachios, fennel, horseradish, and goat cheese, or Polpettine, whichare meatballs with Scamorza, Pomodoro, and  EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), or the Gnoccho Fritto, made with 24-month aged Prosciutto di San Daniele, whipped ricotta, and Mieli Thun Honey. 

All the starters set up nicely for Adalina’s handmade pastas, including Chitarra, which is Duck Bolognese with Watercress, Ricotta Salata, and Calabrian chili. Gnocchi Dells Nonna is a mix of potato, pomodoro, and black pepper.

For big appetites (and bigger spenders) Adalina’s 40-ounce Bistecca Alla Fiorentina includes a 40oz Porterhouse steak, served with fried brussel sprouts and ricotta whipped potatoes. Their Veal Chop Parmigiana has spicy tomato and crispy basil. Lighter appetites will enjoy their Salmon Vesuvio withpotato gnocchi, truffle, and micro oregano.

As we always say here, “SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT!” Created by Nicole Guini, their Head Pastry Chef, try the Adalina Tiramisu, which isa rich combination of chocolate, bourbon, espresso, and a unique smoked vanilla gelato.

Nicole’s Cookie Plate is a “Chefs whim,” and a good bet. Banana Bread Donuts are lively with passion fruit, rum, and black sesame gelato.

Chicago Home and Lifestyles – Getting better at small talk

Even the most intelligent among us dread the inevitable social situation when we must engage in small talk. Unfortunately for them, we all need to engage with strangers or people we don’t know well. Here are a few ways to navigate this or even enjoy it!

One way is to reframe the situation. Think about it as something like a treasure hunt. You never know just how interesting that person standing next to you in the buffet line really is! Who knows what life experiences or cool information they have to share, and where the conversation could lead?

You can start small.Start out with a general talk about the weather, careful not to drag it out for longer than a few minutes. Then, slowly go further to try and get a little more personal. If you ask a co-worker how their weekend was, they might say they went to a concert. Instead of just saying that’s great, ask what the best part of it was. People love to give their opinions and it’s a great way to get to know someone!

Complementing or commenting on their appearance can also be an ice breaker and give insight into that person. But be careful not to sound creepy! Saying someone has beautiful eyes could make them feel uncomfortable, but commenting on an unusual piece of jewelry shows interest. Complementing a tattoo will often lead to an interesting story. 

Try to steer clear of landmine subjects like politics and religion. Even asking someone if they are married or have children can seem intrusive. Inquiring about someone’s work status can be tricky too. Instead, ask what the person does in their off time. This will likely lead to a much more relaxed conversation!

Remember, conversation is a two-way street. Answer generously when you are asked a question. One-word answers are not acceptable. Be an active player. When asked how you are, you can say I’m great and then add why. Perhaps you are trying a new workout you love, or reading a great book, or watching a new series. 

Above all, go into these everyday small talk situations with an open mind. You just might have a good time!

Don’t Assume Your Home Will Sell Itself Just Because it’s a Sellers Market

It’s still high season for sellers out there in the world of real estate. If you just listed your home, you’re probably feeling very confident that your house will garner plenty of attention and sell shortly, right?

While it’s definitely highly possible that your home is ripe for the picking, it’s generally not recommended to just sit back, relax and assume that the home will just ‘sell itself’ just because the market is hot right now. There are actually things you might be doing – and not doing – that could botch the sale of your home.

When properties are on the move and your home isn’t getting much action within the first two weeks of hitting the market, home buyer hopefuls will start to think that there’s something wrong with your house, and assume that they’re in a better negotiating position or blow the home off altogether.

If you’ve got your home on the market, don’t just plop a For Sale sign on the front lawn and walk away. The best real estate agents in the country have a few suggestions for you to set your home listing up so that it’s plucked off the market sooner rather than later.

The Price Point of Your Home Can Make All the Difference

One of the most important factors to consider when selling your home is how much to list it for. Price it too low, and you could leave a bunch of money on the table. Price it too high and you could scare off buyers who otherwise would have put in an offer on your home.

Unfortunately, many home sellers get caught up on the dollar signs they see, thinking that the higher they list their home for, the more money they’ll make on the sale. The truth is, this mentality doesn’t always allow things to pan out the way they should.

Once the home lingers on the market after two or three weeks, it starts to get stale. At that point, you’ll wind up having to slash the price anyway. Even in a seller’s market where demand is high, you’re home won’t automatically sell itself if it isn’t presented in the best light possible. A nicely renovated home is great and all, but if it’s empty or not furnished nicely, it could be a turn off to buyers.

Professional home staging paints your home in its best light, and helps buyers get a clear visual of its highest and best use. People want to be able to see themselves living in the home, so the better able you are to paint that picture, the better the odds are of someone putting in an offer.

It’s estimated that two-thirds of home buyer hopefuls need some help visualizing themselves in your home, so it’s up to you to give them a little assistance in this department.

Don’t Ignore Your Home’s Exterior

Many sellers place a ton of emphasis on the interior of their homes without putting the same amount of importance in the outside. The truth is, it’s the curb appeal of your home that will make a good first impression on buyers. You don’t want to lose a buyer’s interest before they even step foot through the front door.

Make sure that your grass is cut, shrubs are trimmed, flowers are tended to, and any clutter is eliminated. Your front door should be void of cracking or peeling paint, and your front porch should be void of dead leaves and other debris.

And a nice “welcome” mat wouldn’t hurt either.

Don’t Work Alone

Your secret weapon in the entire sale of your home is working with a good, experience real estate agent. He or she will be your guide and counselor throughout the entire process. You’ll get the best advice and suggestions about what needs to be done to sell your home quickly, even if you think it’s the best house on the street. 

The takeaway from this is that there’s work involved in selling a home, even if your pad is impeccable and the market is a hot one. Make sure you do your due diligence and your research in the process, and team up with a realtor who is well-versed in the market in your area. Last but not least, remain humble, and don’t just assume your home will sell itself.
