Kathy’s Home & Garden Tips – Microwave Hacks

  1. Disinfect your cutting board- rub both sides with a cut lemon and microwave for 1 minute.
  2. Disinfect your sponge- wet and wring out, microwave 2 minutes.
  3. Crisp stale chips- lay on a paper towel and microwave 15 seconds. Same works for stale bread but wrap in a damp paper towel.
  4. Need to take a stamp off an envelope? – wet slightly, microwave 20 seconds.
  5. Exploding vegetables? – pierce thick-skinned veggies like potatoes, squash, and tomatoes for steam to escape.
  6. Mug omelet- add veggies, cheese, cooked bacon, or whatever else strikes your fancy to two beaten eggs in a mug. Microwave 45 seconds, stir and cook an additional 45 seconds.
  7. Peel peaches and tomatoes- cut an X in the bottom with a sharp paring knife. Microwave 30 seconds and let sit 2 minutes. Garlic works too! Fifteen seconds for a full head and the peels slip right off.
  8. Juicy citrus- warm in microwave 20 seconds to get more juice, do not cook just warm.
  9. Make frothy milk for lattes or cappuccino- warm milk in a glass jar, shake till foamy.
  10. Parmesan chips- grate mounds of parmesan on parchment paper. Microwave 30 seconds or until melted and crispy.
  11. Microwave needs cleaning now – place two lemon halves in a glass bowl of water, microwave 4 minutes then wipe out the microwave with a damp microfiber cloth.
