Restaurant Review – Scofflaw

This week took me to a new neighborhood! Logan Square is full of adorable (and delicious!) restaurants. I found myself at Scofflaw, a gin-focused cocktail bar. In addition to cocktails, they also serve small plates that “go well beyond bar food”, as their website states. The space is absolutely charming. It is dimly light, with a large dark wood bar, cozy booths, industrial lighting, and clusters of Victorian-esque couches and chairs. I was immediately drawn to a cozy couch near the fireplace. After looking over the menu, I knew we had to try some of the charcuterie items. There is a sizable list of cheeses and meats; you can mix and match your own for $5 each or get a Chef’s Board (5 meats and cheeses plus accoutrement) for $38. We decided to mix and match, choosing a Renard’s Morel and Leek Jack cheese, a Nicasio Valley Tomino cheese, the Scofflaw Chicken Liver Mousse, and Fra’mani Salame Rose. This was absolutely delightful. The board was served with cornichons, stone ground mustard, raspberry honey, and thinly sliced, crispy bread. The chicken liver mousse was fantastic. I love pate and this was wonderful. I smeared mine on a piece of bread and topped it with honey. The morel and leek jack cheese was my other favorite. The texture was firm, but still very smooth and I loved that it had actual pieces of morel mushroom. For my main course, I was craving a burger. I ordered the cheeseburger and fries: double patty, special sauce, griddled onions, dill pickle, served with house aioli. This was a great burger! First off, I haven’t had a burger in a long time, so it really hit the spot. But this is very much my style of burger: simple. It wasn’t so overloaded with ingredients that I couldn’t taste the burger itself. The double patty made it a lot of food, but it was so tasty, I ate the whole thing! The fries were just how I like them as well; medium cut and crispy. I can’t wait to come back and try more things here.
